The jigane features a well-tempered ko-itame grain with some mokume mixed in, and active chikei and yubashiri patterns are clearly visible. The hamon is a plump, niokuchi sugaha, with traces of sunagashi also visible. Ietsugu’s name is engraved on the nakago.

Ietsugu was a group of swordsmiths active primarily from the Muromachi to the Edo periods in Kaga Province (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture); they are known as “Kaga Aoe” due to their beautiful workmanship, which resembles that of the Aoe school of Bitchu. The first-generation Ietsugu was active around the Oei era (1394–) in the early Muromachi period, and the school prospered until the late Muromachi period. Because they resided in Hashizume, Kaga Province (present-day Hashizume-cho, Hakusan City, Ishikawa Prefecture), they are also known as the “Hashizume School.”

Their style features a well-proportioned, slightly curved blade with a jigane and hamon that closely resemble those of the Bitchu Aoe school. In October 1971, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords certified this piece as an authentic Ietsugu katana and, recognizing its exceptional value, issued a “Tokubetsu Hozon” (Special Preservation) certificate.

This Yetsugu sword, affectionately known as “Kaga Aoe” since the Muromachi period, is in excellent condition and comes fully equipped with its original Uchigatana fittings—all at a great price.
