This piece is a tanto equipped with a beautiful koshirae.
The preservation condition of both the sword and the koshirae is very excellent, with no chips, dents, or other defects. A forging flaw of about 8mm appears at a point about 5cm from the hamachi on the sashiura side, but it is not at a level that would detract from the beauty of the piece. The hada has a well-defined chikei of itame mixed with mokume. The niedeki hamon is a wide, spacious gunome, with active hataraki such as kinsen and aranie in the ha.
The name Harushige is engraved on the nakago. Harushige is famous as a swordsmith of the Soshu school in the Muromachi period, and this tanto is from the Shinto period. All the koshirae fittings for the tanto are from that period and are very tasteful. It is also equipped with a kozuka, making it a complete package for a tanto.
Of special note is the sheath lacquering. It is a dark brown glossy lacquered scabbard with irregular linear patterns. Best of all, it comes with a special wooden storage box, with the words "Tanto Harushige 8sun 3bu 5rin Koreari Koshiraetsuki" written in calligraphy on the lid.
This is a fine piece of art that is both affordable and can be passed down to future generations.
