Gendaito refers to Japanese swords made after the abolition of the sword decree issued on March 28, 1876. After World War II, Japanese swords were considered weapons by GHQ and their production was banned. However, due to strong efforts on the Japanese side, Japanese swords were recognized as works of art rather than weapons, and the law was amended to allow for their production, ownership, and sale even today.
