KATANA: A Handbook of Japanese Swords

Made by Living Masters

While many dealers offer only antique blades, Tozando works directly with Japan's contemporary master swordsmiths — licensed artisans still forging today. Each blade is a new work by a living master, made with the same techniques used for a thousand years.

FAQ

Are your swords authentic Japanese blades?

Of course, we only sell authentic Japanese swords. We carefully select only those crafted from Japanese tamahagane steel using techniques passed down since ancient times in Japan.

Do your swords come with certification?

Where applicable, swords are carefully authenticated and accompanied by official documentation or certificates verifying their authenticity, provenance, and historical value. Even for swords without certificates, we meticulously select only those we can confidently recommend to you based on our extensive knowledge and experience. Each piece possesses historical value, even without a certificate.

Do you source directly from Japan?

Yes, all swords we handle are sourced within Japan. Rest assured, we acquire them through professional appraisal from trusted collectors, dealers, and markets within Japan before offering them to you without unnecessary middlemen.

I am interested in purchasing the unappraised swords you are selling. Is it possible for you to request an appraisal from an appraisal agency on my behalf?

Yes, it is possible. As we are full members of the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords, we can apply for an appraisal on your behalf upon your request.

What is a shirasaya mount?

A shirasaya is a plain wooden handle and scabbard designed to protect and preserve the blade. It is commonly used for storage and appreciation of the sword itself.

Can you ship a Japanese sword to my country?

We have over two decades of experience shipping Japanese swords worldwide. However, some countries prohibit the possession or sale of Japanese swords by law, so we recommend first checking with the relevant authorities in your country. Particularly in some European countries, air transport may not be permitted, in which case we may ship via a forwarding service.
