Katana - Mumei(No Signature) - NBTHK Hozon Certificate(Shimohara) - Uchigatana Koshirae - O-suriage Nakago - Koto Era - Aomori 17478

¥720,000

We are pleased to present a unique O-suriage katana with a certificate of authenticity, partially filled in nakago.

The sword is very well preserved with zero defects such as flaws, rust, dents, or chips. The jigane is called jorinmoku, which is a large mokume that is very active and looks like a whirlpool. Jorinmoku is a major characteristic of Shimohara swordsmithing. Also, the gunome-toned midare-utsuri is clearly visible. Hamon is a thin suguha, and hataraki such as sunagashi can be seen.

There are three holes for mekugi, but two of the holes are blocked by partially filled nakago. It is estimated that the sword blade was originally about 75 cm long, but the O-suriage has made it the current length. Although it is an unsigned katana, in December 2024 the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords issued a Hozon certificate of authenticity for this piece, recognizing it as having been made in Shimohara and as being of high value for preservation for future generations.

The Shimohara were a group of swordsmiths who flourished in the Muromachi period (1336-1573) under the patronage of the Hojo clan, and who supported the Hojo clan's military advance into the Kanto region and continued to make swords until the end of the Edo era.

The Tsuka is beautifully wrapped with silk cord in a very labor-intensive Jabara style. The scabbard is lacquered in dark-red-colored Ishime style, accentuating the katana's presence.

This piece is a fine example of the spirit of the Kanto samurai and is a must-have addition to your Japanese sword collection. Take action now!
