TOZANDO KATANA SHOP

Katana - Tomomitsu - Uchigatana/Shirasaya Koshirae - Ubu Nakago - Koto Era - Nagasaki 006116

Here is a katana made by Tomomitsu during the Koto period that is in excellent condition and well preserved.

The sword blade is very sound and polished neatly throughout. On the sashiura side, there are shallow cracks in the forging on the habuchi about 19 cm from the kissaki and 16 cm from the hamachi, respectively. They do not affect the functionality, but they do spoil the aesthetics a bit. Jitetsu is a well-packed itame hada with yubashiri also visible. Hamon is a wide and tall gunome with a well-packed nie. It is also elegantly made with fine chojiashi. Both sides of the blade are engraved with grooves. The name Washu Ju Tomomitsu is engraved on the Nakago.

Tomomitsu was a swordsmith active in the country of Yamato during the Muromachi period. He is said to be the son of Taima Tomoyuki, a swordsmith of Yamato Den, who left very excellent works.

Koshirae was made in modern era and is in very excellent condition. The tsuka is made of black leather and wrapped in the hinerimaki style. The tsuba is from the Edo period, while the fuchi kashira and menuki are modern pieces. The leather-wrapped tsuka with grooves in the blade and its reasonable length make it suitable for use as an iai or batto.

This katana is a Koto period piece that can be both displayed and used.
