Wakizashi - Iyetoshi - NBTHK Tokukbetsu Kicho Certificate - Uchigatana/Shirasaya Koshirae - Suriage Nakago - Koto Era - Niigata 052652

This is a very well-preserved Koto Wakizashi with a certificate of authenticity.

There are very few flaws, chips or rust. There are some scuffs on the surface of the blade from pulling out the scabbard, but overall it is very sound. The Jitetsu is very clean with well-packed itame. Hamon is a gunome with niedeki with various hataraki like tama, ashi, nie and kinsen very active. Both sides of the blade are engraved with bohi.

Originally this katana was much longer, but in the course of time it was shortened by suriage to its present length. The name of the swordsmith, Iyetoshi, is engraved on the nakago. The Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognized this work as a particularly valuable sword, Tokubetsu Kicho, and issued a certificate of recognition in 1978. The certificate states that Iyetoshi was active in the Bizen region and that this piece was made in the late Muromachi period.

The koshirae comes with an uchigatana and shirasaya for storage. The fuchi-kashira and menuki are of the same period and the fuchi-kashira is slightly faded. The tsuka is wrapped with a blue-green silk cord in the Tsumami-maki style. There are signs that the koiguchi has come off and has been repaired. One of the seppa is stamped with the number 383, which we believe to be modern.
