Tanto - Mumei(No Signature) - Shirasaya - Ubu Nakago - Shinshinto Era - Tokyo 22685
This is an unsigned tanto, but it is a rare piece whose registration certifies it as the work of Koyama Soji.
This blade was officially registered in March 1951, and normally, registration certificates only record visible information. At that time, the certificate was issued not by the current Board of Education, but by an organization called the Cultural Properties Protection Committee. This means the appraisal was conducted by the Cultural Properties Protection Committee, not the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords.
The preservation condition is excellent, with absolutely no flaws such as nicks, rust, or chips. The entire blade has been polished and is ready for immediate appreciation. The jigane clearly shows itame and exhibits active hataraki like chikei and yubashiri. The hamon features an uneven pattern of gunome lines with a well-defined nioi.
The Cultural Properties Protection Committee has certified this work as the creation of Koyama Munetsugu. Munetsugu was a prominent swordsmith active during the late Edo period. He is famous for studying the most effective drawing techniques himself and incorporating those methods into his blades, achieving both exceptional cutting performance and aesthetic beauty. In fact, he is said to have been even more skilled than Yamada Asaemon.
Should this work be exported outside Japan, this registration certificate must be returned to the Board of Education. However, if a copy suffices, we can include one with your order; please comment to that effect when placing your order.
