A beautiful Hizen wakizashi in extremely well-preserved condition has just arrived at Tozando.
It is sharpened up without any defects such as forging flaws, rust, or chips. The jigane is soft with well-packed koitame hada and fine jinie scattered throughout. It is also called konuka hada because it resembles the surface of rice bran. Hamon is an elegant, thin suguha with a very calm yet practical tension. On the nakago is engraved the words “Hirotsugu, who lives in the Land of Hizen."
There were three swordsmiths named Hirotsugu in the Land of Hizen during the Shinto period, and this piece is the work of one of these. Koshirae is Tensho style uchigatana equipped with kaerizuno. The tsukaito is decorated with tsumami-maki, which is amateur work. If you wish to have your tsumamaki rewound formally, we can do so for an additional fee of 10,000 yen, please comment so when you place your order. The fittings appear to be a mishmash of different periods. The tsunagi(a wooden blade for koshirae) of different lengths, and the wooden habaki also shows signs of restoration. The scabbard lacquer has a fine speckled pattern of vermillion and black.
Although the sword is very fine and of high value, the price is set reasonable considering the condition of the uchigatana. Not only beautiful but also practical, it is time to add a Hizen katana to your collection.
