This piece is a Unokubi-style dagger in extremely good condition.
The blade is in excellent condition with no flaws, rust, or chips. The jigane features a well-forged itame-hada pattern, with a fine notare hamon. The structure is Unokubi, resulting in a beautiful shape. The nakago is engraved with the name “Ichinohira.”
Ichinohira is most famous for Ichinohira Yasuyo, a swordsmith who flourished in Satsuma Province during the Shinto period and produced numerous masterpieces. On the scabbard, the sashimote side reads, “Ichinohira Yasuyo, passed down through the Shimazu family, blade length 5 sun 9 bu and a half,” and the sashiura side reads, “This sword was recovered from the United States in the fall of 1976, Fukunaga Suiken.”
Fukunaga Suiken was born in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1914, with the given name Fukunaga Katsumi. He held the titles of Doctor of Medicine, Army Lieutenant, Director of the Johnson Base Clinic, and Assistant Professor at Kumamoto University, and is renowned as a sword researcher.
