This katana was forged in the late Muromachi period and has been certified as Tokubetsu Hozon by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords.
The blade's preservation is excellent, showing an old polish yet fully polished throughout with almost no flaws. The jigane displays a well-packed itame grain with chikei and yubashiri visible. The hamon features a base of notare mixed with ko-gunome and ko-choji patterns, with sunagashi visible along the hamon's edge. The nakago is inscribed with the name Norimitsu.
Norimitsu refers to a group of swordsmiths active in Kaga Province (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture) around the mid-Muromachi period, specifically during the Bunmei era (1469-1487). Existing works by this group are rare, making them extremely valuable and holding significant historical importance. Kaga swordsmithing is said to have begun when Tomoshige, his sons, and disciples relocated to Kaga Province from the late Kamakura to Muromachi periods. The “Saemon Norimitsu” swords, particularly those from the Kansei (1460–1466) to Bunmei eras, are especially renowned.
Recognizing its exceptional preservation and significant value for posterity, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords granted this piece Tokubetsu Hozon certification in March 2022 and issued the corresponding certificate. Beyond the shirasaya, it is equipped with an Uchigatana koshirae, featuring a leather tsukaito wrapped in the Hineri-maki style. The habaki has distorted slightly over time, so it catches in the middle when sliding it onto the nakago. Please exercise caution when removing or attaching the habaki.
While the fittings are original, the rest was newly crafted in recent years, making it highly worthy of being passed down as a family treasure to future generations.
We urge you to acquire this rare piece, one of the few remaining examples, and experience the spirit and breath of the samurai for yourself.
