This is a wonderful Japanese sword made by the master Kanekuni during the Shinto period. It is in excellent condition, with no chips, flaws, dents, or other defects, and is in near perfect condition. As is typical of early Shinto swords, there is not much curvature and the hada is well packed and itame, and the chikei is clearly visible. The hamon is a relaxed notare-like suguha, with a konie attached to the edge of the ha, which sometimes doubles or frayed. The inside of the ha is bright and brilliant with a deep nioi. On the nakago is engraved the words, "Kanekuni of Tegai, Wakayama Prefecture, made this in Sumpu.
Kanekuni of Tegai is said to be the elder brother of Nanki Shigekuni, whose real name is said to be Monju Kurosaburo. It is said that these brothers moved to Sunpu (present-day Shizuoka Prefecture) with Yasutsugu I at the call of Tokugawa Ieyasu around Keicho 15 (1610 A.D.), and made swords for the Tokugawa family. Kanekuni and his brother Shigekuni, known as "Suruga Monju," are renowned as representative sword smiths of the early Shinto period, having inherited the traditions of the Yamato Tegai school of the early Koto period.
