This piece is a sound shinto period katana with a large gunome hamon that has a strong presence.
The sword preservation is extremely good, and it has been sharpened throughout. There are no flaws, rust, dents, or chips of any kind. The jigane is well packed with itame and has a mokume-like pattern in places. Hamon is a wide gunome, also commonly called midare. The nioi is well tightened and very powerful. The inscription of Fujiwara Kanekuni is engraved on the Nakago.
Kanekuni was a group of swordsmiths who started from Yamato Tegai in the Kamakura period and were active until the Edo period. This piece was made by the sixth generation of Kanekuni, counting from the first generation, and was active in Yamato Province from the Kanbun to Enpo periods in the early Edo Period. He then moved to Settsu, Osaka, and became a pupil of the first Tambanokami Yoshimichi.
The koshirae is equipped with an authentic tsukamaki, which is made of silk tsukaito wrapped in silk and coated with Urushi-lacquer over it, and a unique lacquered scabbard, in which a cord is wrapped around the scabbard and Urushi-lacquered over it. The themed metal fittings are all from the period and include Kuwagata-shaped ojiri.
