Tango no kami Kanemichi katana, a representative of Osaka Shinto, certified as Tokubetsu Hozon by the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords, is now in stock.
The sword is extremely well preserved and is in such a beautiful condition that it is hard to believe that it was made in the early Edo period. Of course, there are no flaws, rust, or dents of any kind. The hada is a well-packed itame with jinie. The hamon is a wide notare with nioi and kinsen in the ha. The name “Tango no kami Kanemichi Eis engraved.
The first and second generations of Kanemichi are the most famous, but the second generation is especially popular, and this piece is also from the second generation. The second Kanemichi was the child of the first Kanemichi, whose real name was Kiheiji. He also made swords in Edo during the Genroku period. The second generation's style is quite different from the first generation's and reflects the fashion of Osaka Shinto of the time, such as suguha and o-midare.
This set is also equipped with uchigatana koshirae, and like the sword itself, the koshirae is extremely well preserved. The tsuka is wrapped in black silk cord in the style of tsumami-maki. All metal fittings are of the period and have an Edo period look. The scabbard is of the kizami type, elegant and refined.
The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords(NBTHK) has certified this Kanemichi piece as being of very high value for preservation for posterity and should be treated specially, and issued a certificate of authenticity for it in August 2023, Tokubetsu Hozon.
It is rare to find such a great value for money, yet with excellent preservation of the sword blade and koshirae, and with a Tokubetsu Hozon certificate for the work of a well-known swordsmith. If you have a Japanese sword that you want to keep as an heirloom, this piece is a gem that should be on your list.
