This katana was made by Sadahiro, who was active during the Genroku era of the Edo period. Sadahiro was a swordsmith of the Echizen Shimosaka school, a branch of Yasutsugu. Yasutsugu was a master swordsmith who was appointed as an official smith of the Edo shogunate and received one of the characters of "YASU", his name, from Tokugawa Ieyasu. Sadahiro, a swordsmith of Echizen Shimosaka, whose founder was YASUTSUGU, was born in 1640 in Echizen Shimosaka (now northeastern Fukui Prefecture) and was a sword smith from the same region at the same time as the famous toratetsu. around 1688, he left Echizen for Osaka.
He changed his name to Kaganokami Fujiwara Sadahiro and became one of the leading swordsmiths of the Shinto period in Osaka. He also made swords outside of Osaka and in Kyoto, and his outstanding talent was favored by many warriors.
This sword is in excellent condition and there are no spilled blades or other defects. The well-packed itame hada has some active chikei. Gunome style nie and kinsen can be seen in the graceful suguha hamon. The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognized this katana as so exceptionally valuable that it was issued a certificate of exceptionally valuable sword in 1967.
