We proudly present this signed Shinto-period wakizashi with its accompanying certificate of authenticity.
Though categorized as a wakizashi, it is effectively an Unokubi-style o-tanto. The blade is in excellent condition, showing overall old polish but remaining virtually flawless. The jigane features itame mixed with mokume, with well-defined jigane and a clear yubashiri. The hamon exhibits unevenly spaced gunome, resulting in a very bright and dynamic overall hamon. It is an Unokubi-zukumi with bohi. The nakago is inscribed with the name Fujiwara Yoshikuni.
Fujiwara Yoshikuni was a disciple of Yoshimichi. While in Oshu, he went by the name Morishita Magobei. Around the Enpo era of the Edo period, he was invited to Tosa and served as a court swordsmith. His younger brother also excelled as a swordsmith, and one of his blades later became Sakamoto Ryoma's treasured sword.
In May 2025, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognized this work as possessing high value for preservation, granting it Hozon certification and issuing an appraisal certificate.
This powerful wakizashi, favored by the rugged warriors of Tosa, is worthy of adding to your collection. Order now.
