This piece is an unsigned Japanese sword, a so-called bungoto, made in the Bungo (present-day Oita Prefecture) region in the late Muromachi period (1336-1573). It is in a very good state of preservation. The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognizes this sword as a work of the Taira-Takada school and has issued a certificate of authenticity.
Japanese swords known as bungoto were known for their practicality and reputation for cutting well because of the tamahagane and charcoal produced, and those made in the Takada region in particular were distributed throughout the country as high-quality katanas. In particular, works up to the Koto period were known as Taira Takada, because the swordsmiths bore the surname Taira.
This sword has a well-packed itame hada with utsuri visible in places. The suguha hamon has nie and ashi, and there are some areas with tama. The sword blade is in very good condition, with no flaws, dents, or spills. The surface of the sword has a few scuffed areas, but overall the sword is very clean. It is estimated that the long sword blade, which was originally about 2 shaku 6 sun, was shortened to its current length over time.
The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords has recognized this katana from the Koto period as worthy of preservation for future generations, and we are offering it at a very affordable price. Don't miss out on this opportunity!
