Ozaki Masataka is the grandson of Ozaki Suketaka, a leading swordsmith in Osaka during the Shinshinto period, and the son of Takashige. He was also known as Tenryushi, received the title of Nagato-no-kami, and moved to Kyoto.
He was an established swordsmith with many accomplishments in the lineage of the elite, and also served as his counterpart when the noble Chigusa Arigoto made his own swords. This piece can also be considered Masataka's masterpiece as a representative swordsmith of the Osaka Shinshinto period. As proof of this, the NBTHK has certified this work as Tokubetsu Hozon Token(a specially preserved sword), and it bears a certificate of authenticity.
This piece is characterized by its well-packed itame hada and hoso-suguha hamon with a tightened nioi, with the style of boshi or yakizume. The blade is engraved with Fudo Myo-o and Vajra. The jabara-maki tsuka wrapping is fitted with a fuchi-kashira and menuki with a dragon design, and the vermilion gloss lacquered scabbard is decorated with chrysanthemum and phoenix maki-e, creating a gorgeous arrangement.
The scabbard also bears the signature of Sato Kanzan, an authority in the sword world who has served as head of the Tokyo National Museum's sword room and secretary general of the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords. He certified in 1981 that this piece is an authentic work of Osaki Masataka, and also wrote as such on the scabbard.
It is a work of art that combines both practical use and appreciation, and is full of elegance and high spirits.
