Authentic Koto Era Tanto for Sale - Mumei(No Signature) | Tozando
¥150,000 ¥230,000
This is a wakizashi by the 8th-generation Tadayoshi, certified as authentic by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords.
The blade is in excellent condition and has been polished. Both the ji and the ha are in very sound condition. The jigane features the konukahada grain typical of Tadayoshi, truly embodying the essence of a Hizen katana. The hamon is a bright, niokuchi ko-gunome pattern with active ashi and yo patterns. The nakago is inscribed with the signature “Hizen-koku Tadayoshi.” The Tadayoshi lineage continued through nine generations and is famous for serving as the official smiths of the Nabeshima clan. In particular, the first and second generations (Omi Daijo), the third generation (Mutsunokami), and the eighth generation are said to be the four representatives of the Hizen school.
In March 2016, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords certified this work as a piece by the eighth-generation Tadayoshi and issued a preservation certificate, recognizing it as having very high value for preservation for future generations. The eighth-generation Tadayoshi was a swordsmith held in very high regard by the Nabeshima clan. He played a crucial role in the modernization of the Nabeshima domain—comparable to the Satsuma, Choshu, Tosa, and Higo clans during the Bakumatsu period—and was deeply involved in the manufacture of cannons and warships. He often demonstrated sword forging in the presence of the domain lord, earning him the reputation of a master craftsman deeply trusted by the lord. It is said that many of his masterpieces are so exquisite that they are often mistaken for those of the first or third-generation Tadayoshi.
A rare opportunity has now arisen for you to own a sword by this legendary eighth-generation Tadayoshi. Act now!
