Motomitsu was a swordsmith of the Bizen Osafune school active in the Nanboku-cho period, and is said to have been either a son or a disciple of Kanemitsu. The Nanboku-cho period of the Osafune school was characterized by many powerful, tachi-like works of the late Kamakura period, extremely large in both length and width.
This piece follows the style of his master, Kanemitsu, and is a tachi osuriage made in the Nanboku-cho period. The condition of the sword is extremely excellent for being over 600 years old. The width is wide and the kissaki is large. The curvature is shallow, and the appearance is typical of Tachi swords made in the Nanboku-cho period. The hada is mokume mixed with itame and hamon is gunome mixed with midare. Utsuri of midare is also visible. The boshi has a large pointed arc.
This piece is in such excellent condition that NBTHK is appraising it as an important sword. Please take this opportunity to acquire a genuine gem as your heirloom.
