We are pleased to present a dagger in excellent condition, equipped with both shirasaya and tanto koshirae. This dagger is unsigned, but the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords has recognized it as a work of the Yamamura school and issued a certificate recognizing it as extremely valuable for preservation for future generations. The Yamamura school refers to the Yamamura-Nobukuni school in the Echigo region (present-day Niigata Prefecture), and the first Nobukuni is said to be the grandson of Rai Kunitoshi. He is also said to have learned sword making under Masamune. The Nobukuni school prospered greatly during the early Muromachi period (1333-1573). Gengoro Nobukuni, the younger brother of the first Nobukuni, was commissioned by Yamamura Masanobu and moved to the Echigo region during the Nanbokucho period (1596-1568), where he became the Yamamura Nobukuni school.
This sword is in good condition, but there is a 1.5 cm forging flaw on the sashiomote side, about 14 cm from the kisaki. Judging from the shape, it is considered to have been originally carved with a Sanskrit character and then shaved off, or it may have been left unfinished when a Sanskrit character was attempted to be added. Similarly, the blade about 11 cm from the hamachi on the sashiura side has marks as if it had been struck. Hada is beautiful, with well-packed koitame and very visible yubashiri and chikei. Hamon is a thin suguha with niedeki and is returned to omaru in boshi. It is engraved on both sides of the blade, and both are carved with different shaped grooves.
The equipment on the tanto koshirae remains original, but only the sageo has been replaced in later years. The kozuka is also equipped and in perfect condition with no missing parts as a tanto.
