This piece is a tanto recognized by the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords as being of exceptional value as a work of Fusamune, and is equipped with both koshirae and shirasaya.
Fusamune was a leading swordsmith of the Soshu school and was active in the middle of the Muromachi period (around 1505). The sword is well preserved and free of any defects such as flaws. There is a slight thinning of part of the blade due to several polishing, but this is evidence that the sword was actually used.
The sword blade has well-packed itame hada and gorgeously decorated hitatsura hamon. The hamon on the sashiomote side in particular is gorgeously and flamboyantly hitatsura. All the metal fittings of Koshirae's equipment are of the period, and the style is typical of the Tensho style of quality and sturdiness of the samurai. The scabbard lacquer is a special lacquer with blue shells scattered in mother-of-pearl inlay, and the kozuka is also fully equipped.
We highly recommend this historically valuable piece.
