A powerful katana with a blade length of over 77 cm has arrived.
The sword is extremely well preserved, with virtually no flaws such as flaws or rust, and is so clean and well polished that it is hard to believe that it was made during the Koto period. Jigane is itame mixed with mokume and has active hataraki such as yubashiri and chikei. Hamon is thin suguha and the Nioi is well tightened. There is a 5 mm training mark in the ha at a point about 22 cm from the hamachi on the sashiura side, but it does not significantly detract from the aesthetics.
There are two mekugi holes in the nakago, and based on the position of the original hole, we can assume that the blade length of this katana was originally a tachi that was nearly 90 cm long. Although this is unsigned, considering its excellent state of preservation and the unique characteristics of the sword, in June 2007 the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognized this sword as a genuine work of Tadasada and issued a Hozon certificate of authenticity.
Tadasada was a swordsmith active in Izumo (present-day Shimane Prefecture) from the Oei to Bunroku periods of the Muromachi era, and was famous as the craftsman of waza-mono. Since this region produced good quality iron sand, the quality of katana is inevitably excellent.
Koshirae is equipped with uchigatana as well as shirasaya. The metal fittings are simple, yet exude the Samurai's martial spirit. The saya is also equipped with a kuwagata-shaped O-jiri, giving it a magnificent appearance. The sheath is lacquered in nashiji-nuri, an dark-red-colored lacquer, and has both elegance and calmness.
This powerful O-suriage katana is indeed a masterpiece that every collector of Japanese swords should own.
