This piece is a signed, thick-bladed tanto with Kanmuri Otoshi construction.
The blade has been fully polished and is in excellent condition, with virtually no flaws. The shinogi features a groove, allowing one to fully appreciate the aesthetic beauty of the tantō’s form. Furthermore, with a thickness of 7.1 mm, it possesses a substantial, weighty feel. The jigane is a well-tempered itame, and the hamon features a moist, niokuchi with a gentle gunome. The nakago is inscribed with “Suzuki Yamato-no-kami Sukemasa” on the sashio-mote side and “Kyoho 5th year, 2nd month” on the sashiu-ra side. This indicates that Suzuki Sukemasa, who held the title of Yamato-no-kami, forged this blade in May 1720.
Sukemasa was the fifth generation of the Yamamoto family, who had served as master blacksmiths on Awaji Island for generations. Around the beginning of the Genroku era, he became an apprentice to Tsuda Omi-no-kami Sukenori and changed his surname to Suzuki. Although this piece has not been officially appraised, it is a very earnest work.
