Tanto - Kaneyoshi - Shirasaya - Ubu Nakago - Gendai Era - Chiba 31899
This is a dagger made during the Meiji period.
It is in excellent condition, polished on both sides and nearly flawless, though the habaki-moto on mune has a dent and is blackened with rust. The jigane is a well-packed itame grain, and the hamon is gunome with extended ashi and a diffused nioikuchi-style. Both sides of the blade are carved with boji. The nakago is inscribed with “Shinsei-shi” on the sashi-omote side and “Kaneyoshi” on the sashi-ura side.
Shinseishi Kaneyoshi, whose real name was Kosaka Kinbei, was a swordsmith of the Zenjo school, a prominent swordsmith lineage that flourished in Seki, Mino Province (present-day Gifu Prefecture) from the early to late Muromachi period. He is regarded as the progenitor of modern Seki swordsmiths and produced many outstanding works.
In September 1979, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords certified this work as Kicho and issued the corresponding certificate. This tanto is an exceptional piece that can be appreciated by a wide range of enthusiasts, from beginners to collectors of Japanese swords.
