The tsuka — the handle of a Japanese sword — is the only part of the blade you actually touch. It is the point of contact between the sword and the person holding it, the interface through which every movement is transmitted, and one of the most technically demanding components in the entire construction of a nihonto. It is also one of the most frequently faked, most poorly imitated, and most revealing indicators of whether the sword you are holding was made by craftspeople who understood what they were making — or by a factory that did not. This guide tells you exactly what to look for.
What a Genuine Tsuka Is Made Of — the Parts and Their Purpose
Before examining the differences between genuine and imitation handles, it is worth establishing what a properly made tsuka actually consists of. Each component has a specific function — structural, practical, or aesthetic — and each is a separate specialist's work on a genuine nihonto.
Six Things to Check — Reading a Tsuka for Quality and Authenticity
Grip the tsuka firmly and try to move the ito with your fingers — push it sideways, pull it away from the wood. On a properly wrapped tsuka, the ito should not move at all. It should feel as solid and immovable as the wood beneath it. Any movement — any give in the cord, any lifting at the edges of the diamonds — indicates either improper tension during wrapping or a loosening from use that requires attention.
Ito completely immovable under firm finger pressure. Even tension throughout the wrap. No lifting at diamond edges. The wrap feels like an integral part of the handle, not a covering applied to it.
Ito moves or lifts under light pressure. Uneven tension — tight in some sections, loose in others. Diamond openings vary in size and shape. The wrap feels applied rather than integral.

This is the single most diagnostic check for tsuka quality — and the one most buyers never know to make. Look at the fold at each diamond on the tsuka. On a correctly wrapped handle, the ito alternates its twist at every fold — turning first one way, then the other, in strict alternation. This technique, known as moroneri, locks each section of the wrap independently: if the cord is cut or damaged at any point, only that section loosens, not the entire wrap.
The historical reason for this matters: in battlefield conditions, the tsuka of a sword used to block an opponent's blade might receive a cut to the ito. A wrap without alternating twists would unravel entirely from that point. A wrap with proper moroneri would retain its integrity everywhere the ito was undamaged, allowing the warrior to continue fighting.
Each diamond fold shows the ito coming from an alternating direction. The pattern is visibly consistent across the entire wrap. This is a skill that takes time to learn and execute correctly — and it is never found on factory-produced handles.
Every fold faces the same direction. Visually it may look similar at a glance, but examined closely, the pattern is identical at each diamond rather than alternating. This is the default output of wrapping done without proper training — and what Tozando observed being produced at the Chinese factory we visited.

The samegawa is visible through the diamond openings in the tsuka-ito and at the top and bottom of the handle where it is exposed beyond the wrap. Genuine samegawa has a very specific appearance: white or cream-coloured, with a surface covered in rounded, irregular nodes — the natural granular structure of stingray skin. These nodes are three-dimensional and visible even in photographs.
White or cream. Visible rounded nodes — irregular in size and distribution, never perfectly uniform. Slightly rough to the touch through the diamond openings. The nodes of the largest central plate are often prominently featured at the centre of the tsuka's face.
May be black, grey, or painted. Surface texture is too uniform — either perfectly smooth or with an artificially regular pattern. No genuine nodes. Often has a slight sheen that genuine samegawa does not. On cheap factory swords, the "samegawa" is frequently painted wood or moulded plastic.

Menuki have a correct tenchi — a top and a bottom, an upward-facing and a downward-facing orientation. On the omote (outer face) of the tsuka when the sword is worn, the menuki should face a specific direction relative to the blade's cutting edge. Reversed menuki — mounted upside down — are a fundamental error that immediately reveals a lack of knowledge or care on the part of the craftsman.
Additionally, the menuki on the omote and ura (front and back) faces of the tsuka should be offset from each other — not directly opposite. This offset creates an ergonomic hand position. Factory tsuka often position menuki directly opposite each other on both faces, which is structurally incorrect.

A genuine tsuka is shaped for one specific blade's nakago. When the blade is properly seated in the handle, there should be absolutely no play — no wobble, no rattle, no lateral movement of any kind. The fit should feel as solid as if the blade and handle were a single piece of material. Even minor movement between blade and handle is dangerous in use and indicates either a poorly made tsuka or one that has loosened with time and requires attention.

Any wobble, rattle, or lateral movement is unacceptable. A factory tsuka is made to accommodate a range of nakago dimensions — the fit is approximate rather than precise. This is dangerous in any use beyond static display.
The tsuka's length must be proportional to the blade and appropriate for the sword type. A katana tsuka is typically two-handed and proportioned to the blade length. A wakizashi tsuka is shorter. A tantō tsuka shorter still. The standard length of the tsuka on a properly made katana is approximately 8.5 sun (about 24 cm / 9.4 inches). A tsuka significantly shorter or longer than appropriate affects the sword's balance and handling character in ways that compound over use.
Length appropriate for the blade and sword type. The oval cross-section fits the hand naturally. The curvature of the handle corresponds to the blade's sori. Balance point is correct for the intended use of the sword.
Handle too short or too long relative to blade. Circular cross-section (incorrect — should be oval) or irregular shape. No curvature correspondence with the blade. Balance point shifted toward handle or blade beyond appropriate range.
what Tozando observed being produced overseas
In a previous article, we described a visit to an overseas sword manufacturing facility. Among the most instructive observations was the tsuka production. Workers were wrapping handles with the blade already attached — the opposite of correct practice, where the handle alone is placed on a stand for precise, controlled wrapping. More significantly, the wrapping was being executed without the alternating moroneri technique — every twist facing the same direction, which produces a handle that looks correct from a distance but will unravel from any point of damage rather than holding its integrity beyond the cut.
The workers were not doing this incorrectly because they were careless. They were doing it incorrectly because no one in that facility had been trained in the correct technique. Correct tsukamaki is a specialist skill that takes years to develop. It is not something that can be picked up and applied in a production-line context. The resulting handle may look like a Japanese sword handle. It is not made the same way, with the same knowledge, or with the same structural integrity.
This is the gap that the six checks above are designed to reveal. Each one addresses a specific way in which the factory production of sword handles diverges from the genuine craft — divergences that are often invisible at a glance but immediately apparent to anyone who knows what to look for.

What This Means for Buyers — A Quick Inspection Guide
Whether you are examining a sword you already own or considering a purchase, the following sequence gives you a rapid, reliable assessment of the tsuka's quality and authenticity. It takes less than two minutes and requires no specialist tools:
- Push the ito sideways with your thumb. It should not move at all. Any give or lift indicates improper tension or loosening.
- Look at three consecutive diamond folds. The direction of the twist should alternate — left, right, left. If all three face the same way, the moroneri is incorrect.
- Look through a diamond opening at the samegawa. You should see white or cream material with visible rounded nodes — irregular, three-dimensional, slightly rough. Smooth, uniform, painted, or plastic surfaces are substitutes.
- Check the menuki direction. The motif should be clearly readable and correctly oriented. If it appears upside down, or if the omote and ura menuki are directly opposite each other rather than offset, the mounting is incorrect.
- Grip the handle and move the blade gently. There should be absolutely no wobble or play between blade and handle. Any movement means the fit is imprecise or the handle has loosened.
- Assess the overall balance. The sword should feel balanced for its intended use — neither blade-heavy nor handle-heavy beyond the appropriate range for its type. A handle that is too short for its blade is immediately apparent in the grip.

A handle made by someone who understands what a tsuka is supposed to do — who has wrapped ito with the correct alternating moroneri, fitted genuine samegawa precisely to the wood, mounted menuki in their correct orientation, and shaped the core to the specific nakago of the specific blade — feels different from one that does not. Not subtly different. Fundamentally different.
The six checks in this article are not connoisseurship exercises for specialists. They are the minimum due diligence that anyone who holds a Japanese sword should be able to perform. They take two minutes. They reveal, immediately and reliably, whether the object in your hands was made by people who knew what they were making.
The tsuka tells the truth about the sword. Learn to read it, and you will never need to take anyone's word for what you are holding.
