This piece is the work of Naoe Kanehisa, a contemporary swordsmith. Kanehisa apprenticed himself to his father, Masaaki, a swordsmith, in 1973 and trained to make Japanese swords, but when Masaaki passed away in 1979, Kanehisa apprenticed himself to his uncle, Kanemasa. He went on to win many awards and is now one of the leading swordsmiths in Seki. This sword is somewhat lightweight and a little short, so it is recommended for those who are with the smaller stature practicing iai or batto. Koshirae uses modern iai fittings. The scabbard is made of ready-made iai sheath.
The quality of the blade and the simplicity of the shirasaya mount truly reflect traditional Japanese mastery. A beautiful and meaningful addition to my collection.
