We proudly present this bold, large-bladed short dagger in the Unokubi style.
The blade's overall condition is well-preserved despite its aged polish, showing no flaws or damage. The jigane exhibits a fine, tightly packed itame grain pattern. The hamon features a mixed midare pattern combining notare and pointed gunome, with a well-defined nioi-kuchi.
Given its unorthodox blade shape, it is likely a specially commissioned piece made to order for someone. The nakago is inscribed with “Akasaka Ju Kaneiwa.” While Kaneiwa is a well-known name, extant works are extremely rare. The Unokubi like this piece, especially one not following orthodox design, is particularly valuable.
The koshirae is an elegant, characterful uchigatana style, and the tatakinuri-lacquered scabbard perfectly complements the bold blade. The fuchigane fittings feature a Kasuga Myojin motif, suggesting it was made as an auspicious piece.
Unique works by the rarely seen Kaneiwa are unlikely to appear frequently on the market going forward. If you find this piece appealing, your best course is to get it now.
