A Tanto with the charm of the Nanbokucho period has arrived. The blade is well polished and in excellent condition with almost no flaws. The jigane has a beautiful itame pattern with well-defined jinie, and the yubashiri and chikei patterns are very clear. The hamon is a practical yet elegant narrow sugu-ha, reflecting the spirit of the Nanbokucho period. Both sides of the blade are engraved, with soken on the sashimote side and gomabashi on the sashiura side, indicating that this tanto was carefully preserved as a talisman. The nakago is engraved with the name Kanekiyo.
Kanekiyo was a prominent swordsmith of the Yamato Tegai school, active during the late Nanbokucho period in the Oei era. The Tegai school was one of the five main schools of the Yamato-den tradition, affiliated with Todai-ji Temple, and was named after the area around the temple's gate, where swords were crafted. The Tegai school traces its origins to Kanenaga, and its members were active from the mid-Kamakura period to the mid-Muromachi period, producing numerous practical katana used by monk soldiers and others.
In addition to the shirasaya, the koshirae features an aikuchi koshirae with a dashi-menuki style that fully exposes the menuki. The kozuka is also equipped, giving it a very elegant finish. Nippon Token Hozonkai recognized this piece as an authentic Tegai Kanekuni in July 2007 and issued a certificate of authentication. This is an outstanding package with excellent preservation, a legitimate lineage, historical value from the Nanbokucho period, and a certificate of authentication.
It is a masterpiece that we confidently recommend not only to Japanese sword enthusiasts but also to those interested in Japanese history.
