This is a very elegant tanto made in the Muromachi period. The condition of the blade is very well preserved despite the fact that it was made in the late Koto period. The hada, a mixture of itame and mokume, characteristic of Japanese swords of the Koto period, is clearly visible, and hataraki such as yubashiri is also visible. Hataraki such as kinsen and aranye are actively visible in the low gnome hamon of the niedeki, and kaemboshi are visible in the kissaki.
Two grooves are carved on both sides of the blade, and furthermore, next to the grooves, the Sanskrit characters of Dainichi Nyorai, said to be the symbol of the universe, on the sashiomote, and Marishiten, the god of self-defense, on the sashiura. In addition, the scabbard is also equipped with a kozuka. The metal fittings of the koshirae are from the period, and the fuchi-kashira, menuki and kozuka are decorated with motifs of matching shells, which signify marital bliss, so perhaps this sword was made as a charm sword for one of the bride-to-be of a powerful feudal lord. The tsuka is a complex yet elegant jabara wrapping. The scabbard has a kaerizuno. This is a piece that is valuable enough to be your family heirloom, and one that you would like to pass down to future generations.
