Tanto from the turbulent Tensho period in Japanese history is now in stock.
The blade is in excellent condition, thoroughly polished overall with almost no flaws and very sound. The jigane features a mix of itame and mokume patterns, predominantly nie-deki throughout, with some utsu-ri visible. The hamon is a broad guno-me with a thick, dynamic niōi. The nakago is inscribed with “Bishu Osafune Ju Sukesada” on the sashimote side and “Tensho Ninen Hachigatsu-bi” on the sashiura side, indicating this work was forged by Sukesada, residing in Osafune, Bizen, in the eighth month of Tensho 2 (1574).
By the late Muromachi period, numerous swordsmiths were producing katana under the name Sukesada, making it a representative name for Sue-Bizen swordsmiths. Sukesada names incorporating common names, such as Hikobei Sukesada or Yozaemon-no-jo Sukesada, are particularly famous.
The koshirae is in relatively good condition, featuring a black silk tsukaito wrapped in the tsumami-maki style. The scabbard lacquer showcases a textured finish highlighting the wood grain, and it is equipped with period fittings.
We offer this piece at a very reasonable price at Tozando.
