A tanto by Chounsai Tsunatoshi, a representative of the Shinshinto period, is now in stock.
Tsunatoshi was born in 1798 and was an active swordsmith during the Edo period, and his real name was Kato Hachiro. His elder brother was Kato Tsunahide, a swordsmith in the service of the Yamagata clan.
He first became an apprentice of Suishinshi Masahide and then moved to Osaka where he also learned sword making from Suzuki Harukuni. He was a master craftsman who was praised as the leading Bizenden craftsman from that time. His nephew was Ishido Korekazu, and furthermore, he trained such outstanding apprentices as Koyama Munetsugu and Takahashi Naganobu.
The sword is in excellent condition and has been polished, but there is a 1 cm forging flaw about 5 cm from the hamachi on the sashi ura side. The hada is an exquisite koitame, very dynamic with a well-tightened, pointed gnome.
The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognized this piece as highly worthy of preservation for posterity and issued a certificate of authenticity from Hozon Token in 2021.
