Katana - Mumei(No Signature) - NBTHK Juyo Token Certificate(Sadamori) - Uchigatana Koshirae/Shirasaya - O-suriage Nakago - Koto Era - Aichi 55281

¥6,000,000 ¥6,600,000

This piece is an unsigned, O-suriage katana with O-suriage crafted during the Kamakura period.

It is a superb example authenticated by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords (Juyo Token). Its state of preservation is truly exceptional, befitting its Juyo Token designation, and is of museum-quality. The jigane exhibits a predominantly itame grain with some mokume mixed in, and the jinie is well-defined, showing chikei. The hamon features a suguha pattern as its base, with well-defined ashi and yo, and also exhibits yubashiri. Hihon-hi(two grooves) are carved on both sides of the blade.

Due to the O-suriage applied, the signature area was cut off, leaving no record of the swordsmith. However, in the New Year of 1976, Honma Kunzan, the foremost authority on the history and appraisal of Japanese swords, using his own sayagaki (scabbard inscription), identified it as the work of Reizen Sadamori. Furthermore, during the 24th Appraisal Examination conducted by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords in July 1976, this piece was issued a Juyo Token certificate, recognizing its significant value within the history of Japanese swords.

Honma Kunzan highly valued this piece, and it is also documented in his book, Kanto Nichinichi Sho.

The Uchigatana Koshirae features a distinctive two-tone, itomaki-style scabbard lacquer. The brush strokes are applied neatly and beautifully, with vermilion stripes on both the ha-side and mune-side of the scabbard, creating a look that is both unique and exceptionally sophisticated.

The opportunity to own an Osuriage Katana, forged as a Tachi during the Kamakura period, has finally arrived. There is nothing more to say.
