O-Tanto - Mumei(No Signature) - NBTHK Hozon Certificate(Tezukayama) - Uchigatana/Shirasaya Koshirae - Ubu Nakago - Shinto Era - Kanagawa 66177

¥460,000

A refined Unokubi-zukuri tanto with Hozon certification has arrived.

It is in exceptionally fine condition, nearly flawless and fully polished throughout. The jigane exhibits a ko-itame grain pattern with jigane and yubashiri visible. The hamon features a broad gome pattern with a well-defined nioi-kuchi. Within the ha, nie and kinsen are also discernible.

Although this blade is unsigned, in February 1986, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords authenticated it as a genuine work by Tegarayama and issued a certificate of appraisal. The Tegarayama school was a group of swordsmiths active around Tegarayama, a small hill in what is now southwest Himeji City, Harima Province (present-day Hyogo Prefecture).

Tegarayama was said to be popular because the name “Tegara” (meaning “merit”) was considered auspicious. This blade is presumed to be the work of Tegarayama Ujishige. The founder was named Shigeuji, who received the Yamato Daijo title and continued the line for three generations. Later, by feudal domain order, the name was changed to Ujishige. The fourth-generation Ujishige is famous as the beloved sword of Nagakura Shinpachi of the Shinsengumi; he likely relied on its sharpness.

The koshirae includes a shirasaya as well as a tanto koshirae featuring a sheath with exquisite, elegant fuefuki lacquer in excellent condition. It also features tasteful fittings and a kozuka adorned with a shrimp motif, a symbol of good fortune in Japan. Both the blade and the koshirae make this a set imbued with auspiciousness.

It is an ideal piece not only for a collection but also as a gift for someone special to you.
