In the ancient sword city of Seki, Gifu Prefecture, one name has endured for five centuries. Fujiwara Kanefusa — a lineage born in the Muromachi period and unbroken to this day — stands as one of the most storied dynasties in the entire history of Japanese swordmaking. Its current bearer, the 25th Generation Fujiwara Kanefusa, carries that legacy with both reverence and restless creativity.
Born in 1957 as the second son of the 24th Generation, Katsuo Katō began his path to mastery in 1975 when he entered the studio of Sadaichi Gassan — a Living National Treasure and one of the supreme figures of modern Japanese swordmaking — as a live-in apprentice. After years of rigorous training, he returned to study under his own father in 1983, and in 1984 opened his own forge and assumed the name 25th Generation Fujiwara Kanefusa. He now works alongside his eldest son, the 26th Generation Fujiwara Kanefusa, at their forge in Kose, Seki City, ensuring that the flame lit five hundred years ago continues to burn.
The crowning jewel of the Kanefusa tradition is the Kanefusa Midare — a hamon of extraordinary beauty first created by the founding master, in which the crests of the undulating gunome pattern rise independently into rounded, glowing forms, producing a tempering line of exceptional vibrancy and visual drama. In the hands of the 25th Generation, this ancient pattern has been refined and elevated, combining the classical elegance of the Mino tradition with the fierce vitality of Sōshū-den and the lustrous richness of Bizen-den. The steel surface — a finely packed itame grain alive with jinie — catches the light like the grain of polished wood, an effect the master has described as an evocation of the majestic mountains of Gifu that surround his forge.
The blades of the Kanefusa lineage have long been celebrated not only for their beauty but for their legendary cutting performance. An Edo-period account records that a Kanefusa blade cleaved through seven bodies in a single stroke — nanatsu-dō otoshi — and that tradition of devastating practical excellence lives on: the 25th Generation's swords are held in the highest regard among martial artists and practitioners who demand a blade that truly cuts.
Beyond the forge, the 25th Generation has brought the art of the Japanese sword to the world stage. He has crafted a protective short sword for the Imperial Household, made dedicatory offerings to Meiji Shrine and Atsuta Shrine, and presented a sword to His Majesty the King of Jordan. As a former Managing Director of the All Japan Swordsmiths Association, he has conducted public forging demonstrations in Russia, Germany, and beyond, becoming one of the most visible ambassadors of Japanese sword culture on the international stage.
His willingness to engage with contemporary imagination has also produced one of his most celebrated projects: the official recreation of the Mugenblade — the legendary fictional sword from the beloved manga and anime Rurouni Kenshin — a work that introduced the craft of the living swordsmith to an entirely new generation of admirers.
Five hundred years of steel, fire, and devotion — in the hands of the 25th Generation Fujiwara Kanefusa, a medieval tradition pulses with the energy of the present.
