Haruki Komiya, known by his swordsmith name Kokuten, works from his forge in Omuta, Fukuoka Prefecture — a city steeped in the legacy of Japanese swordmaking. Born the eldest son of master swordsmith Komiya Yasumitsu (Yasukimitsu) and grandson of the renowned Kuniya, he is the living embodiment of a lineage that has devoted itself to the art of the sword across three generations.
The roots of the Komiya family stretch back to Miike Ten'ta Mitsuyo, one of the most celebrated swordsmiths in Japanese history. During the feudal era, the family served as the official swordsmiths to the Tachibana clan of the Chikugo Yanagawa Domain, and their distinguished name was recorded among the disciples of the legendary Suishin-shi Masahide — a testament to the esteem in which they were held by the masters of their age.
The family's reputation reached its zenith in 1939, when cutting trials revealed that the blades of Kokuten's great-grandfather, Master Smith Shiro Kunimitsu, possessed a cutting edge of extraordinary superiority. Professor Hiromichi Nakayama, one of the foremost authorities on Japanese swordsmanship, declared that the blade was "no less superior than that of Nagasone Shōkotetsu" — an accolade that sent ripples through the entire swordsmithing world. Henceforth, the Komiya school would be celebrated as "The Great Masterpiece of the Showa Era" and "The Modern Kotetsu."
At the 1941 New Japanese Sword Exhibition, Master Kunimitsu was awarded the supreme honor of Chief Master Smith, taking his place among thirty-one of Japan's most distinguished swordsmiths — including the celebrated Akihide Kurihara and Kuniyasu Yoshihara.
Carrying the weight of this extraordinary heritage, Kokuten entered the forge of the living master Kawachi Kunihira in 1999, immersing himself in rigorous training before establishing his independence in 2004. His talent was swiftly recognized: at the 2006 New Master Sword Exhibition, he received both the Effort Award and the Newcomer Award — a rare double distinction — and has since claimed the Effort Award two additional times.
As a proud member of the Kunihira (now Kunisuke) school, alongside fellow apprentices Takami Kunichi and Kiyota Kunetsugu, Kokuten has set his sights on one of the most demanding artistic challenges in the craft: the Jūka Chōji hamon — a sweeping, layered clove-blossom tempering pattern that has tested the skill of master smiths throughout history. In his hands, this ancient tradition yields blades of breathtaking beauty and exceptional cutting performance in equal measure.
This sword is an exclusive piece from our collection — a singular work in which the full depth of Kokuten's artistry is brought to life.
