Newly Forged Katana by Munenaga

In the coastal city of Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, a forge burns with a singular purpose: to recover what many believe has been lost forever. Fujiwara Munenaga — Iwaki's only resident swordsmith — has dedicated his life to the resurrection of the kotō, the ancient blades of the late Heian and Kamakura periods, whose beauty and technical mastery remain the unreachable summit of the swordmaker's art.

Born in Iwaki in 1984, Munenaga resolved to become a swordsmith at the age of eighteen and entered discipleship under master swordsmith Fujita Kunimuné in Ehime Prefecture, later deepening his training under Fujiyasu Shōhei in Fukushima City. He received official recognition from the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2008, and in September 2021 returned to his hometown to establish his own forge — Munenaga Tantōjō — in the mountain village of Tabito-machi, Iwaki City, where he works to this day.

Munenaga approaches the ancient sword not as a historical artifact to be imitated, but as a lost technology to be rediscovered. The blades of the Kamakura period, he believes, embody a convergence of beauty and metallurgical understanding that the modern world has yet to fully decode — and it is this conviction that drives every hour he spends at the forge.

His blades are defined by a quality he describes as jiba no akarusa — a luminous brightness within the steel and hamon that seems to emanate from within rather than merely reflect light, wrapping the viewer in a soft, otherworldly radiance. The steel surface flows in itame grain interwoven with bold mokume figure, occasionally graced by the ghostly presence of utsuri — that elusive, mist-like reflection treasured above almost all other qualities in the ancient Bizen tradition. His hamon, rooted in the restrained elegance of suguha, is enriched by fine modulations of ko-gunome and ko-chōji, producing a tempering line of quiet intensity and immaculate refinement. The overall form — shinogi-zukuri with a compact, noble kissaki — speaks directly to the proportions and posture of the great blades of eight centuries past.

What makes Munenaga's achievement remarkable is not mere reproduction, but the forging of a genuinely personal voice from ancient materials: a blade that carries the warmth and authority of antiquity while remaining unmistakably the work of a living, thinking craftsman.

Beyond the long sword, Munenaga brings the same exacting sensibility to small blades, sword bags, and accessories, offering a number of his works through the handcraft marketplace Creema — making his craft accessible to admirers beyond the specialist auction room.

He served at the Atsuta Shrine Dedicatory Sword Ceremony from 2002 to 2013, and in 2017 was appointed resident swordsmith at the Ise Ninja Kingdom forging studio in Mie Prefecture, where he introduced the living art of swordmaking to countless visitors.
