This large Shobu-zukuri tanto is a masterpiece accompanied by two special certificates of authenticity: Tokubetsu Hozon and Tokubetsu Kicho.
The blade is in exceptionally good condition; it has been fully polished and is sound, with virtually no flaws such as scratches, rust, or chips. The jigane features a well-tempered itame grain, and chikei is also visible in the ji. The hamon features a mixture of notare and gunome, with occasional ko-choji, and active kinsen can be seen within the ha. The nakago is inscribed with “Minamoto Nobukuni Heishiro Saku.”
This is the work of Nobukuni Heishiro Yoshimasa, a master swordsmith who was active in Chikuzen Province (present-day northwestern Fukuoka Prefecture) during the Kanbun era of the early Edo period. The Nobukuni school is a lineage of swordsmiths active in Kyoto and Kyushu (including Chikuzen, Buzen, Bungo, and Higo) from the Nanbokucho period through the Edo period.
In particular, the Nobukuni school in Chikuzen during the early Edo period forged many swords under the patronage of the Kuroda clan. The works of the Nobukuni school in Chikuzen were of such high quality that the Kuroda clan of Chikuzen highly valued its swordsmiths and prohibited the export of Nobukuni school swords to other domains. Consequently, it was not until the Meiji era that the master swordsmiths of the Nobukuni school in Chikuzen Province became known nationwide.
The Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognized this piece as a particularly valuable sword, awarding it the “Tokubetsu Kicho” designation in July 1966. Furthermore, in December 2024, it was designated as “Tokubetsu Hozon”—a designation for items of such high value that they should be specially preserved for future generations—and certificates of appraisal were issued for each designation.
The opportunity has arrived for you to own this secret, special large tantō—whose magnificence remained unknown nationwide until the Meiji era—accompanied by two types of appraisal certificates. Act now.
