This piece is an unsigned short sword made in the early Edo period and features a tanto koshirae called Matsushiro Koshirae with all the metal fittings original to the period and without any missing pieces.
The sword blade, which has a Shobu-zukuri shape, is very beautiful and the surface is a little cloudy overall, but you can enjoy the hada and hamon without any problems. However, there is a very tiny spot on the blade about 3 cm from the cutting edge on the Sashiura side. This koshirae was made in Matsushiro, Shinano-kuni (present-day Nagano Prefecture), and is called Matsushiro koshirae. Matsushiro Koshirae is characterized by the fact that all metal fittings are made of brass.
Incidentally, Matsushiro was developed as a castle town for 250 years after the Sanada family, active in the Warring States Period, was moved here from the Ueda area in the early Edo Period until the Meiji Period. The fuchikashira, kojiri, kozuka, and kogai are all decorated with bamboo patterns. The Nashiji-nuri scabbard is decorated with a dragonfly, which is said to bring good luck, as black maki-e.
