TOZANDO KATANA SHOP

Katana - Mumei(No Signature) - NBTHK Kicho Certificate(Takada) - Shirasaya Koshirae - Ubu Nakago - Koto Era - Hyogo 88343

This piece is unsigned and has an unokubi structure, which is very rare for a katana, and is a Japanese sword that the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords has certified as kicho as a very valuable katana.

The preservation condition of the sword is very excellent considering its age, and there are no fatal flaws or chips that would lower its evaluation. The unokubi construction, which is a major feature of this katana, is very rare and valuable, as it is sometimes used in older tanto, but not often in the size of a katana. It is shaped as if the shinogi has been largely shaved from a point about 20 cm from the munemachi to the kissaki. The forging line is about 10 cm long from a point about 22 cm from the kissaki on the sashiura side.

The hada is very active and the yubashiri and chikei on the koitame are very impressive. The notare-like suguha is interspersed with kognome and small chojis. And the yo and ashi make this hamon even more interesting.

The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognizes this piece as a work of the Takada school. The Takada school was a group of swordsmiths active in the Bungo region, and their swords were characterized by a form that emphasized robustness rather than elegance, with the three essential elements of a sword being unbreakable, unbendable, and sharp.

Because they were made as swords for military use, they are thickly layered and have a sturdy appearance. Those Takada swords made before the Muromachi period are called Taira Takada, and those made after the Edo period are called Fujiwara Takada, and this piece is a Taira Takada because of its appearance and characteristics.
