Just now arrived a wonderful katana from the Shinto period, equipped with a tachi koshirae.
This piece was made by Omi Daijo Tadahiro, who was the legitimate son of the first Hizen Tadayoshi. Tadahiro, whose real name is Hashimoto Heisakuro, was born in 1604. Speaking of Tadayoshi, he was a disciple of Umetada Myoju, the de facto founder of the Hizen sword. When Tadayoshi died in 1632, Tadahiro succeeded Hizen Tadayoshi at the young age of 19 and changed his name to Tadahiro; in 1641 he received the title of Omi Daijo and continued making swords for over 60 years until his death in 1693, according to legend. Among the masters of the Shinto period, many of Tadahiro's works were recognized as Juyo Token(important swords), next to Tadayoshi I. This shows what a master he was in creating masterpieces.
This work is also an exceptionally fine piece, and because it is extremely well preserved, the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords has certified it as a Tokubetsu Hozon and issued a certificate for it as well. The hada of the sword is Ko-mokume and studded with fine nie, which is typical of Hizen swords known as Konuka-hada, and the workmanship is sparkling and shining. Hamon is suguha with nie, and hataraki such as sunagashi and chikei stand out well.
Koshirae includes tachi koshirae as well as shirasaya. The koshirae is very luxurious and yet has the air of a samurai's spirit, with plenty of metal fittings made in the Edo period. Cracks have developed in places on the sheath due to age.
