Katana - Mumei(No Signature) - NBTHK Hozon Certificate(Hisamichi) - Shirasaya - Suriage Nakago - Shinto Era - Hiroshima 57465
This katana features an unsigned blade with a shirasaya, yet it is a magnificent piece certified by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords in December 2019 as the work of Hisamichi.
Its condition is exceptionally fine, with zero flaws such as nicks, rust, or chips, and the entire blade is polished. The jigane exhibits itame grain with jigane, and both sides of the blade are carved with a groove. The hamon is a dynamic, continuous Higatsura pattern reminiscent of turbulent waves, featuring gunome and gunome-choji that seem to cover the entire blade surface.
In December 2019, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords certified this as a later work by Hisamichi and issued a Hozon certificate, recognizing its high value for preservation for future generations.
Hisamichi was a swordsmith active during the Enpo period of the Edo era, whose real name was Hori Rokurobei. He became a disciple of Echigo no Kami Kanemichi, the second generation of the Kyoto-based Rai Kanemichi, and changed his swordsmith name to Hisamichi. The first Hisamichi was renowned as one of Kyoto's five great swordsmiths, and this work belongs to a later generation following him. The shirasaya is also made from high-quality Japanese magnolia wood, indicating it was carefully preserved.
Only Tozando offers a piece of this quality at this price. While you will undoubtedly enjoy this piece for appreciation, considering its balance and features like the groove, you could also order a matching uchigatana koshirae at an additional cost to enjoy it for iaido or batto practice.
