Tanto - Kiyomitsu - NBTHK Hozon Certificate - Shirasaya Koshirae(with Sayagaki) - Ubu Nakago - Koto Era - Tokyo 132585

Kiyomitsu's tanto from the prestigious Bizen Osafune has arrived. 

Kiyomitsu's tanto are rarely found on the market, making this a very rare item. The blade is in excellent condition, well polished, and almost flawless. The jigane has a good mix of mokume and itame, and utsuri can also be seen. The hamon is a narrow sugu-ha with a niode-deki pattern, characteristic of works from the Koto period. The nakago is inscribed with “Osafune Kiyomitsu, who lives in the land of Bizen” on the sashi-omote side and “Genki 2nd year, 2nd month” on the sashi-ura side, indicating that this work was created in the 2nd year of Genki, or 1571. The year 1571 was significant in the Warring States period, marked by events such as Oda Nobunaga's burning of Mount Hiei and Takeda Shingen's invasion of Mikawa and Totomi.

In December 2023, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords issued a certificate of authenticity for this work as a genuine Kiyomitsu sword and as a piece of high value for preservation for future generations. It also comes with a certificate from the now-defunct Kantei Club (Appraisal Club), which includes the seals of famous sword appraisers. The scabbard is shirsaya, and it has sayagaki inscribed with “Magoemon no Jo, Bizen no Kuni Ju Osafune Kiyomitsu, Genki, Ninen, Nigatsu Bi.”
