A magnificent signed katana, certified as Tokubetsu Hozon by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords in 2022, has newly arrived.

The blade's preservation is truly remarkable considering the era it was forged, befitting its Tokubetsu Hozon certification. The jigane displays a well-ordered itame grain pattern, interspersed with visible hataki such as chikei and yubashiri. The hamon features a refined, narrow, tight-grained sugiha pattern. A kakinagashi-hi groove is carved along both sides of the blade. The habaki features a chrysanthemum crest motif, lending a solemn impression. The nakago bears the inscription of the smith: Sunshu Ju Fujiwara Kanesada.

The Kanesada group of swordsmiths was active in the Koto period and later in the Seki region of Noshu Province. The Kanesada who forged this piece had relocated to Sunpu (present-day Shizuoka Prefecture) to practice his craft. Sunpu, during the Warring States period, saw the construction of Sunpu Castle and the development of its castle town. The government established in Sunpu during the early Edo period functioned as the de facto capital, making it a major city on par with Edo, Kyoto, and Osaka.

This piece is estimated to have been made in the early Edo period, as stated in its appraisal certificate. The koshirae is shirasaya, suitable for sword storage.

This signed Japanese sword, with a Tokubetsu Hozon appraisal, is offered by Tozando at a very attractive price. This is a first-come, first-served deal.
