Katana - Mumei(No Signature) - NBTHK Hozon Certificate(Uda)- Shirasaya Koshirae - Suriage Nakago - Koto Era - Saitama 59573

This piece is a Koto-period sword recognized by the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords as a work of the Uda School.

Despite its age, it is relatively well preserved and sound with no notable flaws or rust. The jigane is a distinctive Koto-period hada with itame mixed with mokume and masame, with yubashiri and chikei also well visible. Hamon is very active with kinsuji and nie based on suguha. The style of this piece is very high spirited, and it beautifully expresses the spirit of a samurai.

Although this is an unsigned piece, in June 2024, the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords issued a certificate of authenticity for it as a work of the Uda school, recognizing it as highly valuable for posterity and as a hozon. Uda was a school that migrated from Uda County in Yamato Province (present-day Nara Prefecture) to Ecchu (present-day Toyama Prefecture) at the end of the Kamakura Period, and its founder is said to have been Kunimitsu. Especially, led by Kunimune, swordsmiths such as Kunifusa and Kunitsugu were active and flourished over the Muromachi period (1336-1573).

Works made from the end of the Kamakura period to the Nanbokucho period are called kouda, and those made in the Muromachi period are called uda, and this piece is from the Muromachi period.

This wonderful sword, in excellent condition and with the hozon certificate of authenticity, is offered at a very reasonable price. Absolutely, you will not want to miss this one.
