Katana - Tomotsugu - NBTHK Hozon Certificate - Shirasaya - Suriage Nakago - Koto Era - Shizuoka 27043

¥950,000

A piece by Tomotsugu of the Uda school has arrived at Tozando.

This is a well-preserved katana from the Koto period, featuring a Saya-gaki by Kanzan and bearing the Hozon certification from the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords. The entire blade has been polished and is in excellent condition with no major flaws. It possesses the appearance of a tachi with a pronounced 2.5 cm curvature, giving it a noble presence. The jigane is itame with some mokume mixed in. The hamon is primarily notare throughout, mixed with kogome. Tomotsugu's name is engraved on the nakago.

Tomotsugu is a representative swordsmith of the Uda school, known for a style reminiscent of Samonji. The Uda school traces its origins to Kunimitsu, who migrated from Uda District in Yamato Province (present-day Nara Prefecture) to Etchu Province (present-day Toyama Prefecture) during the late Kamakura period (around the Bunpo era).

Known for blades that are wide, thin, and deeply curved, swords from this school are rare and highly valued in the market. While multiple swordsmiths named Tomotsugu existed from the Nanboku-cho to Muromachi periods, this piece is attributed to the highly regarded Tomotsugu of the Uda school.

The presence of two mekugi holes suggests the blade originally measured approximately 78 cm. In 2018, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognized this work as possessing significant value for preservation and authenticated it as a genuine Tomotsugu, issuing a Hozon certificate.

The koshirae features shirasaya, with a saya-gaki by Sato Kanzan, a leading authority in Japanese sword research and a prominent figure in the sword world.

This is a truly magnificent piece that you will surely be proud to own.
