TOZANDO KATANA SHOP

Katana - Katsumitsu - Uchigatana Koshirae - Ubu Nakago - Koto Era - Saga 31197

Although the sword is somewhat slender, we offer a traditional Sue Bizen katana at a very affordable price.

The surface of the sword is a little cloudy with some sliding, but the hada and hamon can still be appreciated. The preservation condition is not bad, but there is a 7 cm long forging flaw at the shinogi point about 12 cm from the kissaki on the sashiomote side, which is a little detrimental to the appearance of the sword. In addition, there are some other forging flaws and dots of rust in some places. The hada has itame mixed with mokume and chikei, but cannot be seen clearly because there are marks as if the entire surface has been rubbed. Hamon shows kognome in the well-tightened notare-like suguha. It is slender overall, but especially near the kissaki. It is built more like a large wakizashi than a katana.

The koshirae fittings are all of the period, and are of the Tensho style. The tsukamaki cord was broken, so it has been newly replaced and is tightly wrapped. The nakago is engraved on the back as the work of an Osafune katsumitsu living in Bishu, and the reverse side states that this katana was made in August 1489. Katsumitsu was famous as one of the best swordsmiths in Bizen along with Kiyomitsu in the late Muromachi period (1336-1573), and was one of the leading masters of Sue Bizen.

The less-than-excellent preservation of this katana makes its price very affordable, so it is recommended for those who are considering purchasing a Japanese sword for the first time or for those who are looking for a Japanese sword that has been used.
