Katana - Tadayoshi - NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate - Uchigatana/Shirasaya Koshirae - Ubu Nakago - Shinshinto Era - Ishikawa 6968

¥1,900,000

This beautifully preserved piece is a katana made by the ninth generation of the famous Tadayoshi family in the history of Japanese swords.

The blade is flawless, with no imperfections whatsoever, and is breathtakingly beautiful and in excellent condition. The jigane features a well-packed koitame ha, characteristic of the Hizen Tadayoshi school, known as konuka ha. The chikei is visible, and the jine is well-defined, fully embodying the traditional Hizen style. The hamon is suguha with a thick ko-nie. The ko-ashi and yo ha are also very active. The nakago is engraved with “Hizen-koku Tadayoshi.” Needless to say, Tadayoshi is synonymous with Hizen katana and represents the Hizen school of Japanese swordsmanship from the Shinto period onwards.

This work is by the ninth generation Tadayoshi, counting from the first generation. The ninth-generation Tadayoshi was born in 1832 and passed away at the young age of 49 in 1880. His works are often mistaken for those of his father, the eighth-generation Tadayoshi, due to their similar styles.

However, the ninth-generation Tadayoshi's works are extremely rare in the market due to the Meiji-era sword ban. In March 2023, The Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognized this work as an authentic piece by the ninth-generation Tadayoshi and issued a Tokubetsu Hozon certificate, acknowledging its exceptional value for preservation for future generations.

In addition to the shirasaya, the koshirae includes uchigatana fittings. The tsukaito is beautifully wrapped in beige silk in the jabara-maki style. The metal fittings are all intricately crafted, further enhancing the ninth-generation Tadayoshi's work.

This masterpiece by a legendary swordsmith who, despite being a master craftsman, was forced to retire due to the sword ban of his time, is now available for sale from Tozando along with the Tokubetsu Hozon certification. This is an opportunity you absolutely must not miss!
