Tachi - Kaneharu - NBTHK Hozon Certificate - Shirasaya Koshirae - Ubu Nakago - Gendai Era - Nagano 50788

¥850,000

A highly rare tachi sword associated with the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Taisho has arrived at Tozando.

The blade is in exceptionally fine condition, fully polished throughout, with absolutely no flaws, rust, or chips. The jigane features a beautifully refined itame grain. The hamon is a fine, straight sugiha pattern, returning to the tip in Komaru. Both sides of the blade are carved with boji.

The nakago features a tachi-mei style, with the front side inscribed “Minamoto Kaneharu Saku” and the back side inscribed “Taisho Yonen Hachigatsu-bi”, in other words, this was made in August of 1915. Minamoto Kaneharu, whose real name was Moriguchi Jiro, was a disciple of Miyamoto Kanenori and Kasama Ikkansai Shigetugu.

This work was likely made around the same time as others presented for the Imperial Household events including the Emperor Taisho's “Ceremony of Accession” and the subsequent “Daijosai” (Great Harvest Festival), and is probably one of several made for that occasion.

In December 2024, The Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognized this work as possessing high value for preservation for future generations, granting it Hozon certification and issuing an appraisal certificate.

Swords related to the Japanese Imperial Family rarely appear on the market, making this piece exceptionally rare. It is a masterpiece that not only sword enthusiasts but also history buffs and anyone interested in Japanese traditional culture would absolutely want to own.
