This piece is a sword called Warabiteto, made by Gifu swordsmith Kanehisa in 2019. Warabiteto is a sword that was used for a short period of time from the end of the Kofun period to the beginning of the Heian period, before the curved Japanese sword was born. The name warabiteto was derived from the shape of its nakago, which resembles the shape of a plant called warabi (bracken). More recently, warabiteto was featured in the movie "Princess Mononoke" produced by Studio Ghibli. Warabiteto are classified into three types based on differences in shape and length, and this Warabiteto is a reproduction of the type that existed in western Japan, known as Type III.
This katana was just made in 2019 and has no flaws of any kind, but shows just the faintest trace of forging on the sashiomote side. It is kiriha-zukuri and the mine is round. Itame no hada is beautifully decorated with suguha hamon. The tsuka is wrapped with rattan. The scabbard is equipped with metal fittings that give it the appearance of a tachi sword.
